Concrete Washout Systems Play Key Role in Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge Project

The Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, the replacement for the Tappan Zee, has transformed travel between Westchester and Rockland counties, creating a safer, more reliable commuter route across one of the widest points of the Hudson River. As one of the region’s largest infrastructure projects, its construction required advanced engineering and strict environmental safeguards.

Concrete Washout Systems (CWS) played a vital role in meeting those standards. At peak construction, more than 35 patented washout containers were deployed to safely contain caustic concrete washout—highly alkaline runoff created when cleaning trucks, pumps, and equipment. Without containment, this material could have entered and harmed the Hudson River.

By using CWS’s solutions, the project team maintained compliance with federal and state regulations while protecting waterways and sustaining efficient operations.
